Tip From The Bench

Here at Skylabs, before we put a vintage receiver on the floor for sale, we replace the power supply and filter capacitors, and also replace incandescent lamps with new LEDs. Not only do the LEDs brighten up the old, faded, tuner windows, meters, and indicators, they generate SUBSTANTIALLY less heat inside the cabinets.

Take a look at the internal damage that vintage bulb heat can wreak on a lamp housing and surrounding circuitry for this Marantz 2275. Yellowing of the housing caused by the lamp heat also dims and yellows the displays over time by muting light reflection.

If you have lights out on your vintage receiver, want to brighten up your displays, and/or want to remove the extra cabinet heat, the cost of replacing incandescent lamps with LEDs averages $10-$20 per lamp depending on the receiver. Many receivers can have LEDs installed for under $100. There is no appointment necessary with a typical one to two week turnaround.

Note: Skylabs does not replace incandescent lamps with new incandescent lamps. Also, we do not accept shiped-in units for lamp replacement or servicing.
