Tip From The Bench

Is your vintage stereo experiencing intermittent channel dropout that comes and goes as you fiddle with the control knobs? Are you hearing static noise when adjusting volume levels? These are examples of common symptoms that result in a visit to your local vintage stereo repair shop for a deep cleaning.

As doctors recommend regular exercise to maintain health, Skylabs’ technicians recommend you regularly exercise your vintage stereo controls to loosen and prevent corrosion. Power down your equipment and quickly/repeatedly push buttons in/out, toggle switches up/down, and turn knobs left/right. Deep cleanings are periodically necessary given usage levels and environmental factors, but with regular exercise, your vintage system can stay healthy for longer periods between cleanings.

Side tip: Cable connections deteriorate over time, similar to controls, resulting in noise and cut out symptoms specific to a source component. Check for loose cable connections when issues surface with only a single component.
